DES        The RSPB has some fantastic stories to tell people, but we need your help to get our voice heard by more people. This can be through a variety of methods, local papers & radio stations, websites, mailings even TV if you fancy becoming a bit of a celeb! Do you fancy writing regular press releases about Dorset reserves or talking about our work on local radio or TV? Or coming up with an eye-catching advertising campaign. We want to encourage more people to visit our reserves & get in touch with the natural world & using media is a very effective way of getting our stories & messages across. Training courses are available.  

BUT         Computerate with an eye for detail, some previous marketing experience desirable but not essential. Commitment of 1 day per week would be desirable.

DES        Community talks is a great way of telling stories to local people with a range of different interests. We are hoping to increase our talks programme so that we can meet more people. The aim of the talks is to encourage people to visit our fabulous reserves, learn more about the exciting work that RSPB does & inspire the audience to join RSPB.  

BUT         Comfortable with public speaking & happy to use either Powerpoint presentations or slides. Training available. Commitment of  half day per month , some evening work involved.

DES        Wildwood is set in many acres of ancient woodland, & needs your help in keeping this in top condition, as well as helping us construct & maintain animal enclosures. We have collaborated with the charity Mind to enable people who are mental health service users the opportunity to volunteer at Wildwood & learn new practical skills in our wonderful woodland surroundings. You will help in keeping the Wildwood grounds & facilities in excellent working order, help in the construction of new animal enclosures, help our keeper team develop better conditions for our animals. Skills will incl: pathway construction; waste minimisation; groundworks & building; rainwater collection & distribution system; woodland management incl coppicing. Spaces available 10am to 2pm Mon to Fri.  

BUT         No quals needed. Reasonably fit / mobile, for people suffering mental distress only.

DES        Our Green Pathways Scheme is designed for young people who have shown an interest in working on conservation activities. Unique to the Peterborough area, the scheme is encouraging vulnerable & ‘at risk’ young people aged 10-17 to be proactive in the design & development of their community & effectively install a sense of pride in their surroundings. They are referred to the scheme through a number of agencies incl the Youth Offending Service, Anti-Social Behaviour Team, & local primary & secondary schools. Through conservation based activities, they will develop basic social & communication skills, literacy, numeracy & practical skills. This will help to increase their confidence & self-esteem & develop into responsible young adults with a life-long interest in conservation.  

BUT         Genuine interest in wildlife conservation & working with young people desirable. Subject to CRB disclosure & completion of the Better Together training programme.

DES        Since the late 1990s we have organised a camp during the annual autumn raptor migration period with the aim of curtailing illegal hunting activity & collecting data on bird migration. This is no bird watching holiday, but a serious conservation effort! This years camp takes place from 11th – 26th Sept & you are welcome to attend for 1 or 2 weeks. Costs: Hotel acomm incl all meals 24 Euro; taxi transfer, 25 euro.  
BUT        Enthusiasm & motivation  to monitor raptor migration & help in the fight against illegal hunting of protected species. A number of vols are required to have raptor ID skills (please specify your level of bird ID when you enlist). A crash course in raptor ID will be provided twice during the duration of the camp.

DES        We are working with landowners, vols & visitors to create the UK’s first user-friendly, searchable website of the 22,000 woods which welcome visitors. Vols can help by visiting the woods in their area to take photos & collect information, & uploading this to inspire & inform other visitors online. Vols also help moderate the web pages for each wood, blog about their visits, & use facebook & Twitter to promote woods. We provide training on using the VisitWoods website, moderation, etc.  

BUT   People who enjoy spending time both outdoors & online. You don’t need to be an expert on woods, but you will need to be confident surfing the web & using email.  Good communication skills & enjoy contact with other people. We’re especially keen to hear from older vols & those who have personal experience of disability or of visiting with children.

DES / BUT Based in the London area but with members all around the country, we run work parties at weekends either from Fri eve to Sun lunchtime staying at NT Basecamps (used by NT working holidays) in the S & E but also occasionally further away, incl the W country & Derbyshire & Yorkshire; or day tasks on Sundays, usually at NT properties around the London area that are more readily accessible by public transport. We run at least 1 event each weekend. Tasks incl scrub clearance, esp rhododendrons, step & path building, pond management & other general site maintenance work on NT properties. *We normally charge £8 for a weekend which covers 2 breakfasts, 2 lunches & an evening meal.
